Forgiveness

So one of the many things I try to do each day is nourish my soul, as well as my mind and body. I know that you won’t disagree that we all take notice of the words of a dying friend or family member. We listen to their words. In the four Gospel accounts there are seven sayings attributed to Jesus as he hung on the cross. One of the striking comments is from Luke (23:34) – Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. Forgive them, he did not remind us to love, be kind or give money. He spoke of forgiveness. He knew that like the soldiers nailing him to the cross and those tormenting and abusing him, we need forgiveness too. We disobey, sin, stuff up, make bad choices every day. He knew that we would find forgiveness difficult. And this is true isn’t it? It is hard to forgive and to seek forgiveness. It is only when we truly understand the enormity of what Jesus did on the cross on our behalf that we can forgive others. That is the challenge for me today. Forgiveness.
